As part of a huge renovation we were involved with we transformed this very dated carpeted particle board stiarcase with colonial balustrade into a state of the art to all intent and purpose a solid kwilla (looking) staircase.
Firstly we removed the carpet and all the carpet tacks we then “skinned” the stringers in 12mm thick solid kwilla glueing and screwing over the existing rimu stringers. Next we made replacement treads with nosings and risers from solid 19mm kwilla. These components we prefinished in our factory to be fitted as the very last item once the home was finished.
Next we designed a substantial hand rail from laminated kwilla on edge (for strength) and a combination of solid stainless steel posts and tensioned rigging wire.
N.B. We have had this system engineered certified and passed by our local council.
The end result is that the stair case is remarkably more rigid and quiter to walk on as well as asthetically pleasing with the handrail very safe and comfortable.
See the photos for the process and the before and after result.
